The first novel of the classic Bond series, adapted for film decades later and starring Daniel Craig. I saw the film first, and found the torture scene truly horrifying. Somewhat to my surprise, this scene was a faithful reproduction from the original novel, making me cringe all the more while reading it. Casino Royale introduces the first "femme fatale", Vesper Lynd, for whom the classic martini (a gin martini, with vodka added) was named. The movies make it seem like Bond never drank anything else, but in face, he drank anything and everything, as long as it contained alcohol.
